What happens behind the scenes
Turning a photo into a coloring page happens in two steps. First, extract the outlines of the image: that's what the free tool on this page does, smoothing out textures and then tracing the sharp edges of the photo. Then simplify the drawing, and that's where everything is decided: removing the unnecessary details, redrawing the lines that give the face its structure, closing the areas so they can be filled in with a marker. Which photos to choose
Four things account for 90% of the result: a sharp subject, moderate contrast, a subject that fills at least a third of the frame, and a simple background. For automatic tracing, the background counts double: a sky, a wall or a short lawn give a clean coloring page, while sand, pebbles or dense foliage leave stray lines. You don't need a professional photo, a smartphone shot taken outdoors, without backlight, is plenty.

Pets, landmarks and portraits against a plain background work very well with automatic tracing. Group shots taken from far away, backlit scenes and very textured backgrounds do better with the illustrated version.
- Why do faces stay so simple?
- Automatic tracing only keeps the sharp edges of the photo. On a face, the eyes, nose and mouth are fine, low-contrast details: they disappear with the smoothing that removes textures. The Detailed level keeps more of them. For faces that are truly drawn, that's the job of our AI models, in the illustrated version.
- How do I print the coloring page?
