The newborn gift idea that brings the older sibling in

When a baby arrives, the 2 to 5-year-old at home often gets pushed to one side. Rather than yet another plush toy for the newborn, give the older sibling their own personalised colouring book, with their photos and the very first ones of the baby. They take their place in the event, alongside the new arrival. A gift that takes the edge off jealousy rather than feeding it.

A few examples that work for this case

  • Baby asleep in light pyjamas on a blanket
  • Young girl holding her newborn brother herself in an armchair

Original newborn gift ideas, for the baby and the whole family

A newborn gets dozens of gifts in a few weeks, and many of them look alike. The ideas people remember think about the whole household: the exhausted parents, and the older sibling watching the visitors come and go.

  1. 1.Ready-made meals for the new parents

Home-cooked dishes to freeze, dropped off in the first week home. Parents still talk about it months later. It works for people who live nearby, and it's worth checking allergies and tastes first.

  2. 2.Clothes in 12- or 18-month sizes

Everyone gives newborn and 0-3 month outfits, which babies barely wear. A bigger size gets used once nobody is giving clothes anymore. Think about the season: a warm snowsuit in 12 months suits a baby born in winter.

  3. 3.A voucher for help or babysitting

Two hours of cleaning, an evening of babysitting, an afternoon at the park with the older child. For close friends and family, it's the most useful gift and the one that takes up no room. You just have to follow through in the weeks after.

  4. 4.A first cloth or board book

A book to touch, chew and later look at. It sticks around for years, and you can write a dated note inside the cover. Just check it isn't a classic the family already owns.

  5. 5.A small gift for the older sibling, from the baby

A simple tradition: the baby brings a present for the big brother or sister on the day they meet. A modest toy is enough. The older child gets the message that the baby's arrival isn't happening against them.

  6. 6.A personalised colouring book for the older sibling

A book in their name, made from their photos and the baby's, that they colour at their own pace. You need access to the family's photos, so it suits close relatives more than coworkers. And it gets ordered a few weeks after the birth, once the first photos exist.

Why a big sibling gift matters when the baby arrives

For the first few weeks, every visit goes the same way: the doorbell rings, everyone coos over the baby, a present goes to the parents. The older child watches. At 2, 3 or 4, they don't have the words for how they feel, but they notice exactly who gets what.

A gift addressed to them, handed to them directly, evens things out a little. If it's about them and not just the baby, even better. The colouring book does both: their name is printed on the title page, and they're inside it, a baby themselves once, then a big brother or sister.

It's also a calm, sit-down activity for feeding time. The older child colours next to the parent and the baby, you chat about the pages, and that part of the day becomes time together instead of the moment they get sent off to play.

Which photos to use in a big sibling book

With 6 photos, you can tell a short story in order. One sequence that works well: the older child as a baby, the older child now, their hand on mum's belly, the first meeting at the hospital, the baby alone, then the two of them together on the couch. Turning the pages, the child follows how it all happened.

Hospital photos are often dark, with yellow light and tired faces. Pick the ones taken in daylight near a window, with sharp faces. A blurry photo gives a vague drawing, and the older child wants to recognise themselves.

If the older child is 5 or 6, let them choose some of the photos. They have opinions, and deciding what goes into their own book means a lot at that age.

When to give a newborn gift, and what if you don't have the photos

Hospital visits are short and arms are already full. Many friends and relatives would rather visit in the two or three weeks after the family gets home. That's a good time for the book too: the first photos exist, the stream of visitors slows down, and it's often when the older child realizes the baby is here to stay.

Allow 5 to 7 business days from order to shipping, then transit. If you don't have access to the family's photos, a gift card solves it: you give it right away, and the parents pick their own photos when they have a moment. They know better than anyone which ones the older child loves.

Our tip for a new baby

Mix three kinds of photos: the older sibling as a baby, the older sibling now, and the first photos of the newborn, ideally with the big brother or sister in the frame. The book turns into a small story to tell: you were that baby once, and now it's your little brother's turn. The 6-photo format is plenty. A 2 to 5-year-old colours a few pages at a time, and a short book gets finished before they lose interest. Put the older child's name down as the recipient, not the baby's. It's their book.

Frequently asked questions

The older sibling is under 3. Can they really colour?

They can scribble, which is exactly what's expected at that age. The album still works as a keepsake that grows with them.

Can we give it before the baby is born?

Yes, but you'll have to work with the photos you have (very sharp ultrasounds, photos of the older sibling). Most families prefer to wait for the first photos of the baby.

There are two older siblings. One book each, or one to share?

One each, if you can. The recipient's name is printed on the title page, and each child will want their own. Make two different selections, with each one's baby photos and their first pictures with the newborn. The 6-photo format keeps the budget reasonable for two books.

What newborn gift works for parents who already have everything?

That's often the case with a second baby: the crib, the stroller and the onesies are already there. Give time instead (meals, babysitting hours, help around the house), or a gift for the older child, who is going through a big change. A personalised colouring book falls into that second group.

Does it work in a blended family?

Yes, and it can even help. When a half-brother or half-sister arrives, the older child sometimes struggles to see where this baby fits. Photos of them with the newborn, with their parent and stepparent, show them their place in the new setup. Let them talk about it at their own pace while they colour.
